AfriForum steps in after brutal farm murder in Eastern Cape
The community of Barkly-East in the Eastern Cape approached AfriForum to intervene after an elderly couple was brutally murdered on their farm in the district. AfriForum again appealed to the Minister of Police, Nathi Mthethwa, to prioritise farm murders, but also indicated that the organisation will take the initiative by establishing local security networks in the Eastern Cape.
The community of Barkly-East is reeling after the news broke that Frans Dawid de Villiers and his wife, Ralie de Villiers, was murdered this morning at around 04:00. Dawie, the couple’s son, was attacked with a knife and is currently in hospital, fighting for his life.
Ernst Roets, Deputy CEO of AfriForum, added that the organisation will host a presentation on farm murders in South Africa at the United Nations Forum for Minority Issues in Geneva. The public can support this effort by signing a petition at www.hoelanknog.co.za.
“How long still do we have to wait for Government’s intervention? “Mthethwa’s refusal to act borders on collusion.”
Ian Cameron, Head of Community Safety at AfriForum, added that communities should not wait for Government to intervene, but secure their own property and lives.
“This is why AfriForum is working hard to establish community safety networks across the country. We will visit the community of Barkley-East within the next few weeks to offer our support.”
