Accused in Barkly-East farm murder drops bail application

AfriForum today attended the second court appearance of the accused in the murder of an elderly couple from Barkly-East. Thulani Mkhentane (22), a Lesotho national, has withdrawn his bail application and will remain in custody until his next court appearance on 28 November.

“The investigation continues. We would like to compliment the Barkly-East police for excellent service and the speedy arrest of Mkhentane,” said Ian Cameron, AfriForum Head of Community Safety.

AfriForum is working in Barkly-East to identify areas without safety structures and to support the community to establish these structures. Other service delivery needs in the community will also be determined. AfriForum is also planning a visit to Elliot.

Ernst Roets, Deputy CEO of AfriForum, added that the organisation will submit a presentation on the extent and brutality of farm murders in South Africa to the United Nations Forum for Minority Issues in Geneva in Switzerland during November. Members of the public are encouraged to sign the petition supporting the presentation at www.hoelanknog.co.za.

“How long still do we have to ask for Government intervention? The failure of the Minister of Police to act, borders on culpability.”
