Prioritisation of farm murders: AfriForum will meet with head of police

The civil rights organisation AfriForum will meet with Lt. Gen. Phahlane Kgomotso, the acting National Police Commissioner, on 4 May 2016 to discuss the manner in which farm murders can be prioritised and how AfriForum can contribute. This follows Lt. Gen. Phahlane’s remark in the media earlier the year that farm murders should enjoy greater priority.

This remark was not a decision taken by the Police, but should rather be seen as confirmation that the problem indeed exists. It is in light of this remark that AfriForum contacted Lt. Gen. Phahlane to request a meeting.

“AfriForum plans not only to make suggestions to Lt. Gen. Phahlane, but to also hand over a petition of more than 100 000 disgruntled members who demand that farm murders be prioritised,” said Ernst Roets, Deputy CEO of AfriForum. “Now is the best opportunity to make a real impact, and it is important that as many members of the public as possible who share AfriForum’s concerns about farm murders sign the petition. It is not simply a petition that will end up in a dustbin, but a petition that will be delivered to the desk of the National Police Commissioner.”
